The Olympic Stadium or Stadio Olympico is Rome’s largest sporting facility. Located within the Foro Italico sports complex, the stadium has a capacity of 70,634.
The stadium is mostly used for football and rugby and has hosted four European Cup Finals.
During its early years, the stadium was called the Stadio dei Cipressi. Construction work began in 1927 and was completed in 1932, after a few alterations to the original plan. In 1940, further work to the venue was interrupted due to the outbreak of World War II.
In December 1950, the site reopened to resume building work. The plan was to create a more complex structure, however, due to lack of funds and environmental issues the building was not able to be as ambitious as hoped. In 1951, site engineer Carlo Roccatelli passed away and the work was then entrusted to architect Annibale Vitellozzi. The stadium had reached a capacity of about 100,000 people at this point. The stadium then become known as Stadio dei Centomila until 1960, where it was renamed for the Olympics to what we know it as today.
The building was inaugurated on 17 May 1953 with a football game between Italy and Hungary.
The stadium has also become an iconic venue for musicians. The Olympics stadium has played host to a number of concerts over the years from Miles Davis to Beyonce.
